“I think of myself as an intelligent, sensitive human being with the soul of a clown which always forces me to blow it at the most important moments.” – Jim Morrison
I have been encouraged and motivated by others doing 30 day challenges. From time to time moments come up in my daily routine where I think, “Man I should try doing, or not doing [insert activity here] for 30 days just to see what happens.”
For September 2013, my 30 day challenge is not spending any money dining out.
This particular one pops into my mind every week when balancing my budget. I won’t get into specific dollar amounts, but let’s just say that between quick fast-food lunches, one or two nice dinners per week, some drinks a night or two a week, coffee and a bagel most mornings (and often afternoons) the dollar amount gets pretty high and I just think there has to be a better way.
So yes, as the previous paragraph implies, no morning coffee and bagel, no drinks after work, no dinner out. The only exceptions will be if someone else is buying, but I’m not looking for that as a way to lessen the impact of my challenge. The goal is to be fine with not dining out at all for the whole month.
This is going to be a tough one for sure. Sometimes after a shitty day it’s therapeutic to eat a wholesome meal at a nice restaurant, washing away the day with a good craft beer. Adding to the temptation, I’m in Asheville, which means I have convenient access to some of the best restaurants and beers in the country, with some just a block from my house.
I’ve got a dozen or so “go to” meals, but I’ll need to give a little thought to trying some new ones. What are some other good simple meals? If you have any suggestions feel free to link to or let me know in the comments below.
Alright! Game on!
Addendum: I just noticed Matt Cutts has a Ted Talk on his 30 day challenges. I watched a few seconds and then stopped it because I didn’t want to feel like I needed to have the same results he did. I’m going to wait until a few challenges later before watching his results.
Also … school started today.
Okay these ones aren’t exactly family friendly, so you’ll have to click through to see them. But damn if some of them won’t make you LOL!
